The Hunger Games

Now that my thesis is almost done, I indulged my appetite for good books this Christmas break. One series I'm excited about is The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins. I've read book one and the second book, Catching Fire.

How to begin? The Hunger Games is a mixture of Survivor and Gladiator. In a post-apocalyptic world in which authorities keep the citizens down by yearly selecting a male and female child to participate in the Games. Twelve districts send their two children to fight to the death. The victor returns home and has food and housing provided for the rest of their life.

Collins does a surprisingly tasteful job dealing with the violence. I cried multiple times in both books, but the emotions just prove how aware Collins is of the struggle between survival and mercy. Her pacing makes Katniss's story move quickly and held my interest the entire time. I confess, the addition of romance was totally satisfying and not overly done. The series is marketed to young adults, but I think most adults would find them fascinating if not enjoyable.

VA to LA

I'm on day 2 of my roadtrip back home with Brittany. We were inspired by a friend who "wished she could sit in the back seat" to make a music video.

Pennsylvania Weekend

I was able to spend last weekend in Knoxville, PA with my aunt and uncle and their two boys. We really didn't do a whole lot of anything, but it was so nice to have extra time to talk with them. The photos I took were mostly of the farm (beautiful), but I will add two different shots here.

The first is of my antique purchases. My bill totalled $6 which would have been $20+ in California so I got a steal!

This picture shows how uncomfortable the heat was that weekend. Poor kitty cat!

Art Project

While this class I'm taking this summer isn't too particularly difficult, I was able to enjoy a little bit of creativity. In the midst of writing several manuscripts, we had to illustrate a scene from one of our stories. This scene is taken from my story What Grandma Sees about my blind grandma.

For the Love of Erin

I should be done with my posting for Erin's birthday extravaganza, but I completely forgot to post the video our Grace Group made for her! Our reasons for creating the music video were two-fold:

1. Erin absolutely hates over dramatized musical performances.
2. Erin appreciates good music.

That being said, we choose a classic rock ballad "Alone" by Heart to "interpret" for her. If only you could have seen her face!

Flipped!

Oh my goodness! One of my top favorite books for kids is becoming a movie. I was pretty excited about The Eagle of the Ninth being made into a feature length film, but Flipped is coming out and looks to be AMAZING! I guess I never wrote a post about the chapter book, but the preview looks to be an accurate depiction. While I generally get protective of my books being made into film, this looks dead-on. Take a look here.

On the Road Again

About a week ago Mom and I set off on a great adventure driving across America. We had a deadline so there was very little site-seeing, but we enjoyed the free time to talk, be quiet, and laugh. I so appreciate any chance I get to be with Mom, but this was extra special as neither of us had work that needed to be done. We were free to enjoy each other!
While others doubted our plans, we did make it from Southern California to Virginia in 3 1/2 days despite making two long stops to connect with friends. First, we met up with Joy and Jeremy in Oklahoma City for dinner. We walked to the Oklahoma City Bombing Memorial which is one of the best I've seen.

It might be the last time in a long time I get to see Joy before she and Jeremy head off to Chad, so I'm extra thankful for the brief evening I got to spend with my kindred spirit.

Our other fun visit was with Lynnette in Little Rock. This friendship was filled with many unplanned adventures in high school which made so many good memories! We had a yummy lunch along the river where Lynnette shared some exciting news that I'm not at liberty to share at this time. You'll just have to wait!
